The Road to “Race for the Ages”
表に現れたオファーの数だけでも数知れず。アメリカ国内のみならず、全世界の競馬ファンが注目していたZenyattaとRachael Alexandraの対戦について、先週ついに両陣営がOaklawn Parkが提示したオファーの受諾を発表。それによって、いよいよ世紀の1戦が実現する運びとなったが、この対戦が実現するまでには様々な紆余曲折があったことを忘れてはならない。というわけで、個人的にまとめておきたいという気持ちもあり、ZenyattaのBC Classic制覇から、対戦の正式決定までにあった紆余曲折についてブラホとNTRAあたりの記事から切り貼りするだけの簡単なお仕事をしてみる。おそらく漏れとか翻訳ミスも結構あると思われるが気にしない気にしない。
ただ、終わってみて思ったのだが、ほぼ順調に調整が進められていたRachael Alexandraに対し、一度は引退発表→後に撤回というドラマを見せたZenyattaの方が記事的にもどうしても取り上げられる機会が多くなってしまった。今更ながらZenyattaだけまとめた方が記事もスッキリして良かったかなとも思うがもはや今となっては後の祭りである。

Santa AnitaがZenyattaが08年･09年と2連覇したことでも知られるLady's Secret StakesをZenyatta Stakesに名称変更すると発表。あれ？その後Zenyattaが現役続行することになったわけだが、変更は変わらないのだろうか。そうなるとZenyattaがZenyatta Stakesを勝つという奇妙な出来事も起こりうるわけだが。

“Steve Willard (Zenyatta’s exercise rider) was hurt―he’d hurt his sciatica,” said trainer John Shirreffs. “She went a little fast because she had a different rider on her. Isabelle Bourze, who exercises Life Is Sweet, was on her.”
1月6日に半マイル48秒台の時計を出し、現役続行との噂も流れたZenyattaについてJohn ShirreffsはいつもZenyattaの調教を担当している乗り役では無かったことが時計が早くなった原因と説明。
She’s a big, strong filly, and she needs exercise,” said Shirreffs. “I didn’t want to take her grain away from her because I knew we were going to parade her in front of the public. I wanted her to look herself. So in order to do that, she needed a certain amount of exercise. And then every once in a while she needs to breeze.
Zenyattaはとても大きいんだ。予定されていた引退パレードに参加させるためには適度な調教が必要だったと。
“John works her every two weeks,” said Moss. “Nothing has changed. Besides, it’s very cold in Kentucky right now.”
オーナーのJerry Mossも何も変更はないと。

Moss said that he has not yet made travel arrangements or chosen the stallion.

Works fuel speculation on Zenyatta
Zenyatta worked a half-mile in 48 seconds at Hollywood Park on Wednesday, the fifth fastest of 17 works at the distance. Shirreffs said that Zenyatta was "breathing fire" on Thursday, when she was walked at the barn. She worked a half-mile at Hollywood Park in 50.40 seconds on Dec. 7 and a half in 49.40 seconds on Dec. 21.
水曜日の時計は17頭中5番目に速い時計。引退が決まっているにも関わらずこれで速い時計を3本も出している。
"That decision is Mr. Moss's and he hasn't said anything other than what he said after the Breeders' Cup," Shirreffs said.
そのことについてJohn ShirreffsはBC後も調教を消化しているのはMr.Mossの判断によるものだとし、彼からはBC後は特段新しいことは言われていないと。

BC後も状態が変わらず良かったことに加え、オーナーの意向が強かったことを示す。

The Mosses said Zenyatta was only keeping busy at Hollywood while they waited for the weather in Kentucky to improve before transferring her to be bred. But the temptation to bring her back to the track was apparently too much.
ZenyattaをBC後もJohn Shirreffsの元に置き続けた理由としてケンタッキーの天候回復を待っていたからと説明。だが、再びZenyattaを競馬場へ送り出すという誘惑はとてつもなく大きかったと。
Annie and I just watched her jog on the track this morning. She's so radiant. She seems to still be growing, if that's possible.
"She's a real star. We love to watch her run. So we said, What are we doing? Listen, let's run her."
そして、まだまだZenyattaは成長しているようにも感じると。

“I didn’t want the Eclipse Awards to be a factor,” said Jerry Moss. “Now we can go to the Eclipse Awards and whatever happens, happens. We’re going to have a good time.”
Rachael Alexandraと争っているエクリプス賞が現役続行の判断に影響を与えたと思われたくなかったと述べる。
この現役続行の判断については今にして思えば、エクリプス賞の結果をある程度オーナーサイドは分かっていた(正確に知っていたという意味ではなく雰囲気的なものとして)のではないかとも。ただ、無敗のまま引退することで文字通り「伝説」として彼女のキャリアを終わらせても誰ひとりとして文句は言わなかったと思う。ディープインパクトの引退に際して「あと１年間走りを見守るには、私のハートは小さすぎた」と述べた金子真人オーナーと「We love to watch her run」と語りZenyattaの現役続行を決断したJerry Moss。前者は種牡馬として馬産地全体に貢献させなければいけないというプレッシャー、後者はSanta Anitaの排水トラブルやHollywood Parkの閉鎖問題などあまり景気の良い話が聞かれない昨今の米競馬界において、現役続行を決断すればおそらく実現するであろうRachael Alexandraとの対戦は久々に競馬に人々の注目を集める好機ともなりうる、それぞれの決断には背負っていたものの違いもあったか。

No return race has been selected yet, but Shirreffs told Daily Racing Form that Zenyatta could return in the $250,000 Santa Margarita Handicap (gr. I) at Santa Anita on March 13.
現役続行決定後、初の調教を行ったZenyattaについてJohn Shirreffsは復帰のレースはまだ未定だが、3月13日のSanta Margarita Handicapを使いたいと。
Shirreffs told DRF that no decision has been made on Zenyatta's schedule, but indicated that they would like to return to Oaklawn Park for the Apple Blossom Handicap (gr. I) in Hot Springs, Ark., on April 3.

Oaklawn ParkがRachael AlexandraとZenyattaの対決を実現するべく、2頭が出走する場合に限って4月3日のApple Blossom Handicapの賞金を500万ドルに増額すると発表。他にも距離を1マイル1/16ハロンから1マイル8ハロンへ変更を行うと。賞金は別にして、今までのオファーよりも実現可能性が高いとされた理由としては、コースがRachael Alexandra陣営が望んでいたダートトラックであること、またZenyatta唯一のダート経験がこのOaklawn Parkであることが挙げられていた。

Jackson said in the statement. "If she is in top form and it fits in our schedule, we will be there. Rachel, as you know, likes the track having won twice there last year. As you have heard me say many times before, a number of factors must be considered when deciding where to race a horse, the number one factor being the condition of the horse. Rachel will tell us when she is ready to start her 2010 campaign and we humans must agree she is in top form.”

If she did run, it would mean coming back in the three weeks for the Apple Blossom, but she would have a long time between races prior to the Santa Margarita. If Rachel Alexandra runs it obviously would make it more exciting."

"Out of respect for the level of competition and the importance of this race, I have told Mr. Jackson it was not in the best interest of the horse to race on April 3," said Rachel Alexandra's Eclipse Award-winning trainer Steve Asmussen. "Getting to this level of fitness after a six-month layoff takes time. If all goes according to schedule, and we do not have any further weather delays, the earliest we could have a prep race would be the middle of March. It is then not fair to Rachel to ask her to race again three weeks later."
Steve Asmussenは4月3日のApple Blossomに使うのはRachael Alexandraのためにはならないとする。Woodward Stakes以来6ヶ月休んでいることも考慮して、たとえスケジュール通り悪天候の影響なく調整できたとしても、3月中旬にレースを一度使わなければならないと。その後3週間で再びRachael Alexandraをレースに出走させなければならないのは公平ではない。

Jackson said he asked Oaklawn officials to delay the Apple Blossom by one week, but track officials informed Jackson on Wednesday that would not be possible, according to Jackson's press release.

Apple Blossomでの対戦の正式決定を受け、Zenyattaが出走を予定していたSanta Margarita Handicapをanta Margarita Invitational、すなわち定量戦に変更することを発表。もともとZenyattaは出走を予定していたが、斤量が重くなりそうなら回避することも検討していた。

Oaklawn to pay $5-million purse through tenth place
Oaklawn spokesman Terry Wallace said the purse breakdown allocates 50% ($2.5-million) to the winner, 20% ($1-million) to the runner-up, 10% ($500,000) to third, 6% ($300,000) to fourth, 4% ($200,000) to fifth, and 2% ($100,000) to the horses who finish six through ten.
Oaklawn will cap the field at ten starters.
